Over the last four decades, the prevalence of autism in the United States has increased ten-fold. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated one in 68 American children can be found somewhere along the autism spectrum. Though some of this growth can be attributed to more effective research methods and expanded efforts, the reason for this increase in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) findings is not fully understood.
Advanced studies have allowed medical professionals to develop a more nuanced view of autism in America. In the United States, a male child is four to five times more likely to have autism, or about one in 42 boys and one in 189 girls. In total, more than 3 million Americans live with ASD, while the annual rate of growth among the ASD population fluctuates between 10 and 17 percent. To learn more, visit www.autismspeaks.org.
